We have been changing attitudes about who can succeed as we continue focusing on improving undergraduate teaching. It is your faith and believe in our company that has helped us achieve so much in such a short time. Its transformation lay in the future during WWII, the Cold War, and the tech boom in Silicon Valley. As a number of men might not know our mission, I can testify to its enduring strength as we "aid men in their mental, moral and social development". In the early 1960s, the case for a new campus in Maryland was growing. Fraters, grit and determination have been the cornerstones of TKE successes throughout our history. It was easier for us to do this by effecting an organization of a brotherly character for mutual helpfulness. However, from day one, TKE has lead the way as an organization focused on the benefits of diversity and inclusion. With Gods grace, with faith in our heritage and a strong commitment to the magnificent obsession, with confidence in our future, with inspiration from the enduring wisdom of our Founders, and with the beacon of mission to light the way, the best days of Tau Kappa Epsilon are unquestionably ahead. Although we have experienced significant growth since 1944, the global pandemic has upended higher education on Americas college campuses and Tau Kappa Epsilon is once again facing an existential threat. Given the stature today of our nations research enterprise, most would also be astonished to learn that at that time the most prestigious universities in the world were in Europe and that there was just a handful of American universities that could be called research universities. The federal government was not yet a player in higher education, nor was it a major funder of research most research on American campuses was funded by private philanthropy. o The Chronicle of Higher Education has ranked us as a Great Place to Work seven years in a row. She thanked me for explaining all the positive opportunities awaiting her son and for taking the time to ease her fears. When Joseph Settles, James McNutt, Clarence Mayer, Owen Truitt, and C. Roy Atkinson gathered at 504 Locust Street in Bloomington, Illinois on January 10, 1899, and formed the Knights of Classic Lore they created a society whose avowed purpose was to aid men in their mental, moral and social development. Our most successful and impactful research efforts are frequently interdisciplinary and based on successful collaborations across the campus, with other academic institutions, and with external partners. We are addressing health disparities in work ranging from biomedical research on diseases that affect underserved populations, to statistical modeling in public policy to understand the causes of persistent differences in health status among disadvantaged populations such as African Americans, Hispanics and American Indians, and to identify interventions to close the gaps. The National Academies, in Research Universities and the Future of America, argued that it is the role of these institutions to produce the new knowledge and educated citizens who will drive innovationadvances in ideas, products, and processes that create new industries and jobs, contribute to our nations health and security, and support a high standard of living. And so I think, for example, of the important research we are doing to increase understanding of AIDS, develop anti-cancer strategies, improve the aquaculture industry, environmental research, and contribute in such areas as the digital humanities, imaging and digital arts, and public policy. Phi Delta Theta not only rejected them for not being conventional, but frowned on the name Knights of Classic Lore and suggested we start a new fraternity. o We now have more than 70,000 alumni who are working in Maryland and beyond as artists, social workers, policy analysts, doctors, and dentists, healthcare workers, teachers, lawyers, engineers, and computer scientists. Our partnerships have deepened and matured over the decades. o With UMB, our strongest partnership, we continue to develop research collaborations through the seed grant program. At my own installation in 1993, I remarked that at the founding of Stanford University or even at its 25th anniversary, no one could have envisioned what it would one day become. The Higher Education Act of 1965, a key piece of Great Society legislation, was passed under Johnson, expanding federal postsecondary support. Our founding fathers had a vision that was progressive and revolutionary back in 1899, creating an organization that would consider personal worth and character to be principle qualifications for membership. Many on campus simply wanted to get on with their work and studies. Whether in the chapter room or the boardroom, my time in TKE has highlighted that our Fraternity's true strength lies within our members' diversity. We are providing academic initiatives, student affiliation opportunities, transfer student support, assistance for near-completers, and opportunities for the kind of real-world connections afforded through the Shriver Center, BreakingGround, and the Alex Brown Center for Entrepreneurship. Success is never final. On this special day, I ask that you reflect on what brought you to TKE, what keeps you engaged in the Fraternity, and how you can give back. Through these experiences and our educational programming, we are creating and fostering next generation leadership. These traits are critical if we are to be great founders. The Grand Council and I look forward to continuing to support the philanthropic work of our Fraternity and expand our financial wellbeinga key pathway to a more secure future.
